I enjoyed this song a lot because it explained about the Nativity in a very nice way. Mom likes this song a lot because it explains about Jesus being Love, and that Love or Jesus is all around. I enjoyed this song because it taught me about Jesus more and it was very nice. I liked the part of the song where it explained that we cannot judge people about doing wrong or being bad, because we have all done something we regret and we have all been bad at one point.

Christmas School: Each day Sophie and Lily have spent time crafting, creating, paiting, and making gifts for all the people on their lists.
We also started our cookie baking!
After Christmas, we'll post pictures and descriptions of all the gifts the girls made this year.

Shakespeare Reading Journal:

When hero went to school the next day, she ignored all of the dog jokes and pretty much didn’t speak all day; that got her through. On the way home from school she sat next to Aaron again, when she got off, what Hero thought was a neighborhood bully stole Aaron’s favorite baseball cap. He ran down the street with his friends one another blonde, and one a tall red head. Hero ran after them comforting Aaron who was screaming his head off. She told the boy with the cap to back off and pick on someone his own size. The red head looked impressed; he didn’t have anything to do with the hat incident any way, he just wanted something to do. The red head stared at Hero and finally asked if she was Beatrice Netherfield’s sister. When Hero responded yes, the boy with the hat and his friend burst out laughing. The red head punched him and he went home crying to his mom. The friend and Aaron tagged along. When hero started walking to Mrs. Roth’s house, the red head ran up with her. He said his name was Danny Cordiva, and he thought that standing up for Aaron was really nice. He also told Hero that the boy with the hat was Aaron’s brother. Hero felt weird about that, she accidently made a sibling fight; she was going to get it from Aaron tomorrow. Hero and Danny kept talking down the street until they arrived at Mrs. Roth’s house. When Hero started to say good-bye, Danny yelled out at Mrs. Roth and Mrs. Roth answered him like Danny was her own son. But hero knew that couldn’t be true. Has Mrs. Roth befriended everyone helpless little kid in the neighborhood? Hero thought. But no, Danny was the son of the town Police chief. He must have been over here a lot last year when they were investigating the Murphy house for the diamond. Mrs. Roth said that Danny Cordiva weeded her garden for her last year. Hero only stayed for a little bit that day when her mother called her over and Danny’s father called him as well.

Days 70-74 Book Report

Please read prior post for Christmas School plan. Sophie is doing a lot of work, but we're keeping most of her work a secret for Christmas Day. However, some things she's doing we can post and below is a great Book Report!
*She's also reading her Shakespeare novel and completing a few pages of her Language Arts book. I will post her Cookie Math later this week.

Title: The Very Best Christmas tree

Author: Tony King

1.       Summarize the story:

The Bones family loved Christmas. Every year they got a Christmas tree. The Bones family handmade each and every one of their Christmas ornaments. So each year Mr. Bones picked out a bigger tree to hold all of the ornaments. The first year Mr. Bones picked out a tree so big that the Bones’ daughter could see it from the third floor. Mrs. Bones hated having such a big Christmas tree. She told her husband how she felt and Mr. Bones said he would buy a smaller year next year. Next year came and of course Mr. Bones picked out a tree that was almost as big as the last one! Mrs. Bones was so unhappy that she sat at the bottom of the stairs and cried. Mr. Bones said that it looked smaller in the field than it actually was. Mr. Bones promised Mrs. Bones that she could pick the tree out the next year. That year came quickly and Mrs. Bones went to the tree farm and picked out nice small tree. The tree was pretty but the Bones’ children were sad. The tree could not fit all the ornaments. They told their father and Mr. Bones and Mrs. Bones came to a reasonable agreement for the next year. They would both pick out the Christmas tree. That year was just around the corner and Mr. Bones and Mrs. Bones went to pick out the Christmas tree. They picked out a nice Christmas tree that was a little bigger than Mrs. Bones had hoped for and a little smaller than what Mr. Bones had hoped for but was fat enough to fit all the ornament’s that the children made. That was certainly, The Very best Christmas tree of all.

Christmas School 2011

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! As you know, this is our second homeschool year and one of the things we liked most about homeschool last year was "Christmas School." Sophie and I have worked really hard on our first unit. She learned a lot, I taught a lot, and we both produced excellent work. Now it's an appropriate time for a little "break," but that doesn't mean we're not still working!

A couple of years ago, friends and family starting discussing the potential wastefulness of the American holiday season and begin questioning the importance of "gifts" just for the sake of giving something. For years, most of the gifts I gave were hand-made and the response of both the receiver and the giver (myself) was so genuine and sincere, I earnestly wanted to pass on that feeling of the true meaning of Christmas to Sophie and Lily.

I believe that gift-giving truly is about the thought and not the actual physical thing in the wrapping and there is nothing more thoughtful than a gift you hand-make for someone you love. Last year Sophie and Lily created and made each and every gift they gave. They each made over 30 gifts and countless cookies. Sophie especially understood the lesson when she felt the joy of watching the people she loves, who she thought about when she prepared and created each unique gift, open hers and were thankful. It was a magical moment for me when she declared: "It really does feel better to give gifts than to just get them!"

So this year our homeschool Christmas School tradition continues. We have made our list, planned each gift, and have begun our crafting and cooking and painting and sewing! Sophie and Lily will create and give almost 30 hand-made gifts again this year and they will learn new crafts as well as refining their talents learned last year.
We also read a lot of Christmas and holiday books and talk about the meaning and lessons of the season. Sophie will do extended book reports and she reads the books aloud to Lily. We also watch a lot of Christmas movies together when we're crafting and baking and she'll also complete some reports on our favorites! I will post the completed reports throughout the month. 

I have created our first Cookie Math worksheet of the season--one for Lily and one for Sophie. They will calculate and complete at least 4 Cookie Math worksheets this month and I will post them throughout the month of December.

Most of our "work," however will not be posted in our usual day-by-school day format because we want to keep our gifts a surprise! We are keeping good track and taking pictures! At the end of the season, once all the gifts are distrubuted, Sophie and I will post a cool PDF document called: 12 Days of Calderwood Homeschool Christmas 2011, which will include every gift Sophie and Lily made with pictures and some instructions and recipes.

In January we start school again and will start where we left off with Lewis & Clark in 1805 and learn about Westward Expansion, Pioneers, the Trail of Tears, and the lead-up to the Civil War.
We will start our next science unit during December and continue in January learning about Weather!

Finishing the unit.

Sophie’s Blog: *Write 20 complete, well-written sentences about the first unit and 70 days of school.

My first unit in sixth grade was about The Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark. I learned a lot of interesting material during this unit because these are two very interesting topics. For my final projects at the end of this unit I made a Louisiana Purchase comic book and a Lewis and Clark expedition board game. They turned out very well and both show a lot of education in a very creative way if I do say so myself. For science I studied eco-systems which was also very exciting to learn about because I have three eco-systems that I see almost every day! I observed the ponds in the front, back, and the farm to learn more about eco-systems. I enjoyed learning about eco-systems this way because it informed me just a little bit more every time I watched the pond rather than just reading from books. For math this unit I studied geometry. I love geometry and I really enjoyed learning about all the shapes and angles and measurements that you can find in everyday life. One of the activity’s I liked doing during geometry studies was the backyard measurements where I went outside in the yard and measured the sizes of six different objects. It was really quite fun! I also like backyard angles where I found and measured different objects with different angles. Also for geometry I am making a blue print of a house with Emma, I am sorry to say but with all the drama of the last couple weeks, we have not gotten around to finishing it yet, but it will be done sooner than later. I really enjoyed this last unit and am ready to take a little break but get back in to school, school, in January.

Science: Eco-System Poster

*Sophie, describe your poster in 10 good sentences:

For my final project of science for this unit I made a poster about Eco-systems. I took information from my 6x6’s that I did on eco-systems and pasted them on to my poster. I also took my drawings and pond observations and put them on the poster as well. My poster explains about the importance of an eco-system and what eco-system’s are. Mom showed me a trick for writing my title at the top and making all the letters fit. The trick is to put the first letter where you want it and the last letter where you want and just keep filling in the rest doing the same pattern. I think it turned out rather well. It felt good to accomplish this project because this was the first bit of school that I did after I found out the terrible news.

Farm School: Almanac & Comic Book

*Sophie, describe your comic book & almanac, 10 good sentences:

At the farm for this unit I made a comic book for the Louisiana Purchase. I also made a fall almanac. I worked with gamma mostly for these projects but Bo helped a little too. Gamma helped me make caricatures for my comic book. I have got to say, it is pretty hard to draw the same character the exact same way over and over again! My fall almanac summarizes my summer, and explains of what happened during the fall. It came out beautiful and I thank Gamma for helping me and putting so much time and effort in to it.

Lewis & Clark: Board Game

*Sophie, describe your game: making it and playing it in 10-15 good sentences:

For my final project of this unit, I made a Lewis and Clark expedition board game. Lewis and Clark was probably my main topic of the unit so I know a whole bunch about them now. To make the base for the board game we took an old Crayola art set carrier that we got for Christmas a long time ago. We painted it grain and then pencil lined in the squares for the game. I already had a story map drawn so don’t worry, I was not doing this free handed! Gamma came over last week to help me paint in the squares. We decided on Gold, Pink, Purple, and orange for the coloring of the squares. We took rocks to use for the players, Sacagawea, Lewis, Clark, Patrick Gas, and Charbonneau. We collaged on some birds and Indians and over all, the game looks fantastic! Me and Dad are going to play it after I’m done writing this so….. RIGHT NOW!

Book: Shakespeare’s Secret

Chapter 4: Hero sat down with Mrs. Roth who promised hero she would tell her the story of the Murphy diamond. She said that the Murphy’s that lived in Hero’s new house before Hero, Had a secret diamond hidden in their house, a big one, almost the size of a walnut, Seventeen carats! It was part of a necklace, a very beautiful jeweled necklace that has been in Eleanor’s (the woman who lived in Hero’s house before her) family for centuries. Mrs. Roth told Hero that Eleanor’s maiden name was Vere and Hero wondered why she needed to know that, but it was very important. Eleanor and her spouse Arthur hid the diamond in Hero’s house but no one knows where. A year ago someone broke in to the Murphy house and stole the necklace, but not the diamond, everybody wondered why. Later Hero asked her father why Arthur Murphy was so interested in his job. Hero’s father said it was because Eleanor Murphy was a descendent of Edward Vere, The secret Shakespeare!

Math: Sophie has finished both her her workbooks--Guinness and Sylvan math! We've ordered two more books and will start working with them starting in January.

She's also done some cool Backyard Measurements math activities and has worked with Emma on her blueprint, which helped build her geometry skills.

We've also been working with the Southwestern Advantage math program *picture of book

On Tuesday Nov. 29th Sophie and I spent an hour and a half reviewing her math skills. Here's what we worked on:

1. Writing whole numbers--standard form, expanded form, written form, and short-written form. We practiced each form and discussed the uses of the form in communication.

2. Ordering numbers--number lines & lining up digits

3. Memorizing multiplication facts

4. Memorizing division facts

5. Strategies for Subtraction

6. Word problems--4 steps to solving problems-- What you know; What you need to find; Estimate answer; Calculate answer--Review & Check

*we worked through about 7 word problems together, following the steps.

Based on this review, Sophie will need to practice and work on her multiplication and division facts so that they are easily recalled

We will also continue working with Word Problems and beginning in January she will do at least 1 word problem a day for each school day

We also worked through a final Geometry worksheet together with 10 good, hard problems titled "Points, Lines, Planes, and Angles.

Sophie did a great job and she learned a few "new" things today and worked on some math vocabulary

She accomplished 3 hard problems by measuring angles--as many as 6 unknown--witt only 1 angle measurement given!
