Solstice

Farm School: Solstice, December 22, 2011
*Provided by Gamma at Farm School*

On Dec. 22 we celebrate the winter solstice. And as we all know, this marks the Christmas holiday season which in many places around the world has become more of a commercial holiday than a spiritual one.

During this time of great change on the planet, people yearn for a deeper way to work spiritually and to celebrate holidays. People yearn for deeper and more authentic ways to connect with each other. During the holiday season many people feel empty and some people get depressed.

In indigenous cultures it is believed that everything that is alive has a spirit and we live in partnership with the spirit that lives in all things. For it is believed that all of life is connected to a web of life. And together with all of life we live in a place of cooperation and partnership. It is important to honor and respect all of life that is connected to this amazing web.

Traditional food and drink offerings are left by the tree. The shaman in the community chants and gives thanks to the helping spirits for carrying the prayers of the people up to the universe so that the dreams manifest back on earth.

People tie ribbons loosely on the branches of the tree. As the tree will continue to grow it is important not to choke the branch with a ribbon that is tied on too tight.

The ribbons tied on the tree are empowered by individuals in the community with personal prayers as well as prayers for loved ones, families and for the community itself.

In celebrating the solstice this year you might want to consider creating a prayer tree in your community. Start by giving thanks to the tree in a way that calls to your heart. Intention is the key. Bless this tree with the love in your heart as this living being works in partnership to carry prayers to the creative forces of the universe.

Loosely wrap different colored ribbons that contain prayers for yourself, your loved ones, your community and the planet. Invite others in your community to do the same. This way of working brings people in your community together and this in itself creates healing for all of life.

If you cannot use a tree in nature to create a prayer tree you can buy a Christmas tree and instead of placing ornaments on it invite your community to place ribbons, letters, drawings, etc. that include prayers.

The time of solstice is a powerful time for reflection. This is also a wonderful time to remember what you are grateful for and bless others and all of life itself.

When we can experience our gratefulness for life we transform our perspective about what is happening in our own lives and on the planet. For when we feel grateful we can experience the beauty instead of the pain. We want to acknowledge those who are suffering and feel compassion. At the same time it is important to experience the beauty and the gifts that life brings for us. This is an ancient teaching that has been passed down through many cultures and many generations.

Let us together hold a positive vision for the planet. Let us embrace ourselves, our loved ones, and all of life with love.

Love heals!

Think about what you want to add to the prayer tree. Do you want to find a ribbon and write Andy’s name on it and say a prayer? And one for Cassidy & Althea. One for the pigs and the chickens who gave their life for us to eat. One for Maine, so that the winter isn’t too long or too cold and a lot of good snow. One for Marie and Sadie and their family for hoping she gets better and the doctors take  good care of her. One for Mr. Trell, who we miss and hope is well. And one for Jake who can’t be with us but we think of him often and love him. One for Aunt Kim and Uncle Paul and the girls who live so far away but we love them everyday and hope they are safe and well. One for Emma, who is so sad. And one for Sophie’s body to stay strong and get well and recover from all her falls fast and stronger. One for Lily who keep getting bigger and funnier and we love her because she makes us laugh. And one for Mom and Dad, for another year together.

Sophie Blog:

Skating Test

On Thursday, I tested in Massachusetts again. I retested my intermediate moves. I have been working really hard on them and I was definitely more confident then I was last time. This time when I tested I skated with my confidence instead of my fear.  I moved right along and passed my moves by a lot. I am very proud of myself and my coaches.

“A Christmas Carol”

After testing on Thursday we met up with my friend Emma from Annie. We had dinner with her and then went to go see her in a Christmas Carol.  She played the ghost of Christmas past. She was excellent and so was the show. Marley was super creepy and Scrooge was very good. It was the classic Christmas Carol story with a little twist at the end. Instead of showing scrooge bringing the turkey to Bob Cratchit’s house, the narrator came out with his son saying he was tiny Tim. It was very nice new ending and a very good production of A Christmas Carol.

Christmas Poem

Santa’s Hat

How does this man do it,

The one that dresses in red and white,

The one that delivers presents

On this cold December night?

This has been a mystery

For many years til now,

And I, Santa’s elf, am here

To tell you why and how.

At exactly 5 o’clock,

On the blessed Christmas Eve,

Santa lines his reindeer up,

And he’s about ready to leave…

But before he goes, he knows

He has to do one more deed.

He has to get his special hat,

Which he absolutely needs!

This hat is all the magic,

This hat is how he does it.

It’s how Santa delivers gifts

And all the kids love it!

Since there are so many kids

All around the world,

Santa freezes time

To complete all his work!

So the mystery’s been answered,

But please do not tell

The secret of Santa’s hat…

You don’t want an elf to yell!

1.       Summarize the story:

This story explains about the Nativity and, the three wise men going to see Jesus. It also says that there was a fourth wise men that came, but never actually saw Jesus. He went along with the other wise men. But saw someone dying on the side of the road. He pulled over to help the men. He was late, but he saved that mans life. He went back home to Arabia to but more camels so he could travel faster and maybe get to see the King of Kings. On his way to Bethlehem, The fourth wise men stopped in Jerusalem because he heard of a baby boy being born there. This was not the King of Kings, but this baby was sick. The fourth wise men gave one of the special gifts that he was saving for the King of Kings to the family to buy medicine to heal the baby boy. The medicine worked and the wise man was on his way again. Any way the wise man kept trying to find the King of Kings, but never could, he stopped to help the people in need, and made a living out of it. One day in Jerusalem, the wise man had heard that the King of Kings was getting crucified that day for being named the King of the Jews. The wise man thought he could help, the man only had one gift left to give to the King of Kings. But then he saw a citizen of Arabia that the wise man knew very well getting dragged off to get crucified. This young woman was only twelve or so. The wise man decided to save the life of this little girl. They had a meeting and Isaac and his mom were on T.V. They decided to have all the people who believed that this act was wrong, to put up pictures of menorahs in their windows to say that they believe that Hanukkah and Jews are equal to Christmas and Christians. Dave Matthews Band “Christmas Song,” 2003

She was his girl; he was her boyfriend
She be his wife; take him as her husband      Mary and Joseph
A surprise on the way, any day, any day
One healthy little giggling dribbling baby boy     Jesus
The wise men came three made their way    The three wise men
To shower him with love
While he lay in the hay   manger
Shower him with love love love
Love love love
Love love is all around
Not very much of his childhood was known
Kept his mother Mary worried
Always out on his own     Jesus growing up
He met another Mary for a reasonable fee, less than
Reputable as known to be

His heart was full of love love love
Love love love
Love love is all around
When Jesus Christ was nailed to the his tree   Easter
Said "oh, Daddy-o I can see how it all soon will be
I came to she'd a little light on this darkening scene    Talking to God
Instead I fear I spill the blood of my children all around"
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/d/dave+matthews+band/christmas+song_20036600.html ]

The blood of our children all around
The blood of our children all around
The blood of our children all around
So the story goes, so I'm told
The people he knew were
Less than golden hearted
Gamblers and robbers
Drinkers and jokers, all soul searchers
Like you and me

Rumors insisited he soon would be
For his deviations
Taken into custody by the authorities
Less informed than he.
Drinkers and jokers. all soul searchers
Searching for love love love
Love love love
Love love is all around

Preparations were made
For his celebration day
He said "eat this bread and think of it as me
Drink this wine and dream it will be
The blood of our children all around
The blood of our children all around"
The blood of our children all around

Father up above, why in all this anger have you fill  Talking to God
Me up with love
Fill me love love love
Love love love
Love love
And the blood of our children all around

Write a paragraph about what you thought about the song: (5 sentences)

I enjoyed this song a lot because it explained about the Nativity in a very nice way. Mom likes this song a lot because it explains about Jesus being Love, and that Love or Jesus is all around. I enjoyed this song because it taught me about Jesus more and it was very nice. I liked the part of the song where it explained that we cannot judge people about doing wrong or being bad, because we have all done something we regret and we have all been bad at one point.

Days 75-79

Day 75-79
Christmas School: Each day Sophie and Lily have spent time crafting, creating, paiting, and making gifts for all the people on their lists.
We also started our cookie baking!
After Christmas, we'll post pictures and descriptions of all the gifts the girls made this year.

Shakespeare Reading Journal:

When hero went to school the next day, she ignored all of the dog jokes and pretty much didn’t speak all day; that got her through. On the way home from school she sat next to Aaron again, when she got off, what Hero thought was a neighborhood bully stole Aaron’s favorite baseball cap. He ran down the street with his friends one another blonde, and one a tall red head. Hero ran after them comforting Aaron who was screaming his head off. She told the boy with the cap to back off and pick on someone his own size. The red head looked impressed; he didn’t have anything to do with the hat incident any way, he just wanted something to do. The red head stared at Hero and finally asked if she was Beatrice Netherfield’s sister. When Hero responded yes, the boy with the hat and his friend burst out laughing. The red head punched him and he went home crying to his mom. The friend and Aaron tagged along. When hero started walking to Mrs. Roth’s house, the red head ran up with her. He said his name was Danny Cordiva, and he thought that standing up for Aaron was really nice. He also told Hero that the boy with the hat was Aaron’s brother. Hero felt weird about that, she accidently made a sibling fight; she was going to get it from Aaron tomorrow. Hero and Danny kept talking down the street until they arrived at Mrs. Roth’s house. When Hero started to say good-bye, Danny yelled out at Mrs. Roth and Mrs. Roth answered him like Danny was her own son. But hero knew that couldn’t be true. Has Mrs. Roth befriended everyone helpless little kid in the neighborhood? Hero thought. But no, Danny was the son of the town Police chief. He must have been over here a lot last year when they were investigating the Murphy house for the diamond. Mrs. Roth said that Danny Cordiva weeded her garden for her last year. Hero only stayed for a little bit that day when her mother called her over and Danny’s father called him as well.
