Unit 2 End Notes
Sophie has completed all of her Unit 2 work with a 98% on
her Weather Review, a wonderful collection of weather poems and illustrations,
4 completed chapters and 100% on her first Latin Quiz, and an excellently
written and presented biography report on Dolley Madison.
She and I both deserve a little break! So I am off down to
Orlando to spend the weekend with my brother Aaron and hopefully get a lot of
good, warm sun and return to cold, wintry Maine glowing and ready for Spring!
Sophie will spend a few days hanging out with her Dad and sister, relaxing and
playing.
When I get back we’ll pick up with the start of Unit 3. If
you’ve been following the blog, you know that we’ve finished with the War of
1812 and we’re beginning to look west.
Westerward Expansion is the first topic of our new unit and
this unit will move fairly fast through history one week at a time. Each week
will consist of 2-3 6 x6s on topic, books, webquests, and sometimes movies and
field trips.
Each day will still include working from her math and
language arts workbooks and we’ll still reserve at least one day a week as a
Basket Day, since Sophie really enjoys those! We will continue working through
the Latin book and by March 1 we’ll start learning Spanish too!
She has a couple cool new math workbooks to that will be in addition to two she works with now--she will still do one page from two workbooks each day but one workbook will be a choice between three:

For science Sophie will continue to learn about Earth
Science, specifically about how the planet was formed and continues to reform
itself—this study will move towards a Geology unit this spring. I have a couple
of really cool books about Earth’s Shifting Surface, erosion, weathering, and
glaciers.
As I said, we’re heading west for week one and she’ll read
and very cool, old-school, choose-your-own-adventure style history book about
Westward Expansion.
Week Two: 1820 and the State of Maine. *I hope to take a
field trip to the state museum in Augusta this week. She will also start a
writing project for a contest for middle schoolers hosted by The Telling Room.
Week Three: Indian Removal & Trail of Tears.
Week Four: 1836-1846
The Oregon Trail—yes, she will play the game! And the Alamo…
Week Five: (should be March 5th ish) Oregon Trail
cont. and the Mexican-American War
Week Six: 1850 Fugitive Slave Act and the Underground
railroad (hope for a field trip here too—there are underground railroad sites
in Portland)
Week Seven & Eight: That’s Entertainment Show week!
State of Maine—Joshua Chamberlain, Bowdoin College, Harriet Beecher Stowe
End of Unit 3. Reviews and projects yet to be determined.
But I am thinking about a long history review and a big science project. April will
bring us into the Civil War and preparing for our big trip South!
