Vocabulary

1. Newfoundland (dog): a breed of very large heavy dogs with a thick coarse usually black coat; highly intelligent dogs and vigorous swimmers; developed in Newfoundland

2. sagacity: acuteness of mental discernment and soundness of judgment.

3. inherited: to take or receive (property, a right, a title, etc.) by succession or will

4. voting rights: rights of participation in esp. public elections

5. Lehmi Shoshone: The Lemhi Shoshone are a band of North Shoshone, called the Akaitikka, Agaideka, or "Eaters of Salmon

6. interpreter: a person who provides an oral translation between speakers who speak different languages

Details/ Facts

1.  Charbonneau was the son of a Sioux
mother and a White father, but he chose to live among the Mandans and work as a fur trader and
interpreter

2. At first they referred to her in their log as "Squaw," a derogatory Algonquian Indian word meaning
prostitute

3. “They give as a reason that it cows and breaks the spirit of the boy to whip him,
and that he never recovers his independence of mind after he is grown. They treat their women
but with little respect, and compel them to perform every species of drudgery"

4. The explorers would soon learn that the LEMHI-Shoshone Indians whom they would depend
upon for the success of the Expedition were in a terrible state of poverty

5. The Shoshones had been continually raided and robbed by the Minitaree Sioux and Blackfeet,
who were armed with rifles supplied by white traders

6. By order of the President, Lewis and Clark were assigned with the job of discovering a water
passage through the unexplored Northwest that would be a direct route to the Pacific Ocean. To successfully complete the trek through unexplored territory, and map the Northwest Passage to the Western Coast, the White men would need the help of the LEMHI-Shoshone Indians whose land they would claim for their own.

1.  1. Who was York? A: A slave to Lewis and Clark during his expedition. He was a childhood companion to Clark, an accompanied them on their journey. He was believed to be a good dancer, and very athletic.

2. What was the Indians’ response to York? A: The Indians were believed to take dirt and go up to York and try to rub the black off of him but of course, it did not work, the Indians knew he was different but they were not scared of him, the Indian way of treating blacks teaches us, just because you’re different doesn’t mean your wrong

3. How did York feel at the end of the expedition? A: York felt at the end of the expedition that he had earned his freedom, he asked Clark to be freed but he denied until 10 years later when Clark finally took him up on his offer

3. Groups of campers were going to an island. On the first day 10 went over and 2 came back. On the second day, 12 went over and 3 came back. If this pattern continues, how many would be on the island at the end of a week? How many would be left?
A: 77

4. Conrad's Taxi Service charges $1.50 for the first mile and $.90 for each additional mile. How far could Mr. Kulp go for $20 if he gives the driver a $2 tip?
A: 17 miles and 10 cents left

5. Compare different pay scales. Decide if it is better to receive $300 a week or to be paid hourly at a rate of $7.50 per hour (40 hour work week). What factors could affect your decision?
A: They equal the same amount, I would choose hourly because I would probably work more hours than planned more often

6. In the old days there were elevator operators to transport passengers. Don Downs always started his day in the basement. He went up 20 floors to take his boss some coffee. Then he went down 8 floors to take a Danish to his friend. He went up 7 floors to check things out. This was the halfway point in the building. How many floors are in this building? Draw a diagram to show how you would figure this out.
 A: There were 38 floors

1. As the Corps explored the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis’ dog was quickly adopted by the crew and became known as "Our Dog".

2. A bear came within thirty yards of our camp last night and eat up about thirty weight of buffalo suit which was hanging on a pole, my dog seems to be in a constant state of alarm with these bears and keeps barking all night"

3.  Some were curious "last night we were all alarmed by a large buffalo bull, when he came near the tent, my dog saved us by causing him to change his course"

1. The dog is mentioned frequently in the journals, including Lewis’s praise of the “sagacity” of Seaman

2. In discovering this spelling of the dog’s name, Dr. Jackson, commenting in his book, Among the Sleeping Giants, wrote: “No person named Seaman is known to have been associated with the lives of either captain, and as a common term the word seems strangely nautical in view of its location. When it became necessary for Lewis and Clark to name a creek, river, or other geographical feature, they were predictably direct and simple in their choices...They usually went straight to the heart of the matter and chose a sound, reasonable name for the simplest of reasons: to commemorate a member or sponsor of the expedition.”





3. Seaman was mentioned about 8 times in both Lewis and Clark’s journals.

4. On July 5 he “saw two swam in this beautiful Creek...” and proceeded on “3 miles to the entrance of a large creek 20 yds. wide [which I] Called Seaman’s Creek.”

5. It is unclear whether Seaman traveled the last leg of the journey down the Missouri River to St. Louis. No post-expedition primary documentation has been found linking a Newfoundland dog to the exploring enterprise.

6. Bewick accompanied his commentary with an engraving that represented the breed as black and white, later to be known as a Landseer.

At the fort Clatsop National Historical park. They had an event on the second Wednesday of July (when  Lewis bought Seaman) where you could go interact with Newfoundland dogs. Meriwether Lewis bought Seaman because Newfoundland dogs are known to be great with water, and tracking animals and other things that Lewis and Clark would need to have done on this journey.

York was a big part of the expedition because he was the only slave for the Corps of discovery who are used to having many slaves around. Although close to the end of the expedition, I bet York felt equality to the white men when he was given a right to vote. York had small but big role in the Lewis and Clark expedition, they probably would never had succeeded if it wasn’t for York.
