7 x7 Seven Subjects & 7 things I learned             Day 84 & 85       Jan. 24, 25, 2013

1.       Math

2. Science

a. I learned that the measurement of time is very important to the study of physics because it helps with a lot of other experiments in physics, like discovering the way things move. An, time is a pattern.

b. Today I made a candle clock and a water clock which are two ways that people used to tell time in the 1500s before clocks were invented.

c. For the candle clock we lit a small birthday candle and set a timer for five minutes. In the five minutes, the candle shrunk a little bit more than a quarter.

d. I also made a water clock, were we stuck a small hole in the bottom of a paper cup and put it over a Ball jar timed it for 5 minutes.

e. Some of the observations that I made for the candle clock were: moving around it too much could tilt the candle set something else on fire. Sometimes the fire could go out if a gust of wind kills the flame. I estimated that 1 candle would be 15 minutes in which I was correct.

f. Some observations I made for the water clock are: That you have to have enough water because the water comes out of the hole fast. It could be messy because the water could spill. Every 5 minutes, it filled up ¼ of the jar.

g. I think that the water clock is better if would want to measure a short period of time, and the candle clock would be better if you were to measure a longer amount of time. However, I think that the water clock is the most accurate.

3. History

a. I learned that after the attack of Pearl Harbor, Japan later attacked Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaya, The Dutch Indies, and the Philippines. The United States, Britain, and many other countries, declared war on Japan. On December 11 Germany and Italy declared war on the United States making it officially, World War II.

b. I learned that in early 1939, Hitler called on many of the world leaders, the French king, Winston Churchill, An American military leader, and more to say that Germany was just going to take the Sudent land and Czechoslovakia because they wanted to be German, and that he wasn’t going to take over any other countries. This was called the Munich meeting, and Hitler was lying the whole time!

c. I learned about food rationing. Some of the food items rationed were, sugar, butter, meats, oil, processed baby food, canned or frozen fruit, and vegetables.

d. The British government also had to ration food, but they also encouraged their citizens to grow their own food using this rhyme: Dig! Dig! Dig! And your muscles will grow big

Keep on pushing the spade

Don’t mind the worms,

Just ignore their squirms

And when your back aches, laugh with glee

And keep on diggin’

Til we give our foes a wiggin’

Dig! Dig! Dig for Victory!

e. Bread was not rationed during the war but the government decided that only whole, unsliced loaves could be sold, which helped keep the price of bread low. American cooks rushed to buy bread knives. This is where we get the phrase, “The greatest thing since sliced bread!”

f. The day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Americans rushed to the store and bought tons of sugar, they knew from experience in World War I that sugar would soon be in short supply.

g. The basic 7, that American citizens were encouraged to eat every day included, eggs, soft cheeses, mayonnaise,  dried fruits, fresh fish and shellfish, bread and cereals, fresh milk, dried pasta noodles, chicken, and jellies and preserves.

4. Language

a. In Spanish there are two ways of saying mother and father depending on whether you are talking about male or female. Esta es mi madre and Este es mi padre.

b. There are two ways of saying “my” in Spanish. It depends on whether “my” is followed by a singular or plural noun. Mi tia, My aunt Mis Padres, my parents.

c. I learned that hermano means brother and hermana means sister.?Tiene hermanos? Means have you got any brothers or sisters.

d. Tengo una hermana Lilia. No tengo hermanos. I have one sister, Lilia, I hav’ne got any brothers.

e. Mis abuelos, means My grandparents. Emma mi abuela. Miko mi abuelo.

f. Aaron mi tio, Kima mi tia. Aaron is my Uncle, and Kim is my aunt.

g. Hannah, Olivia, y Daniella mi primas, Beno mi primo. Hannah, Olivia and Danielle are my girl cousins. Ben is my boy cousin.

5. Reading

a. I read a biography of Jim White today. He was young cowboy in New Mexico and he discovered over 100 beautiful underground caves in 1901. He then opened these beautiful hidden wonders to the people and Carlsbad Caverns became a national park. Is A Hidden Wonder a biography or an autobiography? A biography because it is not written by Jim White and it is written in the third person.

b. Rewrite this sentence so it could be part of an autobiography about Jim White… “In June of 1901, a young teenaged cowboy named Jim White happened to see a large black cloud as it poured out of the Earth: In June 1901, I saw a large black cloud as it poured out of the Earth.

c. Describe one of the main differences between an autobiography and a biography: An autobiography is written by the subject of work; himself or herself.

d. I also read Fredrick Douglas the slaves’ autobiography. Douglass describes his early life, when he lived in a cabin with his grandparents.

e. Because Fredrick Douglass lived with his grandparents; he didn’t realize that he was a slave at first.

f. Because slave mothers did not keep track of months and years, few slaves knew in what year or month they were born. Douglas thought he was born around 1817.

g. Eventually, Douglas realized that his grandmother, the children, and her cabin were all owned by someone called Old Master.

6. Writing

Luna Lovegood is a wizard at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She has light blonde hair that reaches about her shoulders, and reminds me of straw or hay because it is always tangled! Her blue eyes always look like a cloudy sky because they frequently change the shade of blue depending on the light. She has a very sweet sounding British accent that sounds like the way we think a princess should sound. She dresses in odd clothes with unusual colors and quite a bit of eccentric feathers and ruffles .She would be considered short compared to some of her friends at Hogwarts. However, she is probably the most generous and caring person ever!

7. Art

a. Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque were some of the most famous cubist artists.

b. Some of the characteristics of cubism are, objects broken up and put back together in an abstract form. All sides seen at once, (multiple viewpoints) geometric shapes without realistic details!

c. Some other characteristics are fragmenting, shallow space, and subdued colors

d. Rather than showing one side of a thing, cubists wanted to show all sides of a thing.

e. Some other famous cubism artists are Juan Gris from Spain, who painted cubism Portrait of Picassos and Fernand Léger from France 1881- 1955

f. Cubism was the most influential art movement of the 1900’s.
