January 3, 2011 Day Seventy-Four

5 x 5 for 5th Grade

We purchased two Math workbooks today and we have a plan to do one page in each every school day starting with the first and ending on the last. The two books are:

Grade 5 Guinness World Records Math

Grade 5 Sylvan Basic Math Success

5 Vocabulary

1. Syllabus: An outline or a brief statement of what you're going to learn

2. Scholarship: The act of being a scholar and actively learning; Being so good at a hobby or a sport that they can get into college by paying less money

3. Research: Intensely studying for a project for a unit using multi-sources

4. Ancestry: The study of Ancestors and where they came from; your heritage

5. Portfolio: The gathering and presentation of all the scholar's work in the past unit

5 Details/Facts

1. Our first unit this "year" is going to be Colonial America.

2. My favorite unit so far was Native Americans and navigation.

3. We are going to look at stars at Caca's and Travis's house and Uncle Aaron got me 2 telescopes for Christmas, one has a GPS!!

4. I did two Algebra problems and arithmetic.

5. We went to borders today and got 2 math books and a book on Ben Franklin.

1. Today Mom and me are going to do a syllabus of what we're going to be studying in the next 3 months or so.

2. Synchronized skating gets a scholarship for college but figure skating does not. L

3. I do research in web quests and I do research by reading non-fiction books and I also do research online.

4. One of mom's hobby's is studying ancestry and she was writing a book about it.

5. I did a big portfolio presentation in November when I did my explorers play and my scrapbook video.

1. Were the Mayflower passengers referred to as pilgrims in 1620? A: No. It was not until 1793 when Reverend Chandler decided to call them pilgrims, but back in 1620 they knew they were pilgrims.

2. Which families or individuals were believed to be part of the Separatists group? A: The Separatists or pilgrims on the Mayflower were generally known as the Allerton, Bradford, Brewster, Carver, Chilton, Cooke, Cooper, Crackstone, Fletcher, Fuller, Priest, Rogers, Tiller, Tinker, Turner, and Winslow families.

3. Which families or individuals were believed to be identified as strangers? A: There were more strangers then Separatists on the mayflower most were from London

4. Did any of the Mayflower Pilgrims live in the present day United States prior to 1620? A: Yes. Stephen Hopkins lived in Jamestown in 1609-1610

5. Who was referred to in Longfellow's poem in the line, "speak for yourself John"? A: In the poem "The Courtship of Myles Standish" John Alden (My Ancestor!) was mentioned.

4. If you triple a number you will have one-half the number of hours in two days. What is the number? A: 8

5. If you double a number, you will get the same as the triple of one-fourth of 24. What is the number? A: 9

Sophie's Blog: Hi it's me, SOPHIE today we started back with school on unit two, Colonial America. We made a whole syllabus of what our plan is for the next 3 months(90 days). We are going to go to 5 places for field trips and we're going to video in those places in May. In Science we're going to work on the human body and Latin. And we're going to work with Lily an hour a day, EVERY DAY!!!!!
