Even though it's Columbus Day, we decided to have school and save a day off for a beautiful Spring day for skiing or an early Summer day instead. Sophie and I made a deal to make a poster in honor of our field trip (s) on Saturday instead of two 5 x 5s. So the next two days' post will not be in a 5 x 5 format. But we are still quite busy and productive!

Sophie's Blog: Why is it important to visit places like the Pownalborough Courthouse? What are the three most important things to know about Columbus? Why do some people feel like we shouldn't celebrate Columbus Day (Hint: there are two different reasons believed by two different kinds of people)? Do you think it's still important to celebrate or acknowledge Columbus Day?
It is important to go to historical sites, because it is good for education. That he was a dreamer, and he believed he had a destiny, and he wasn't a quitter. And he created the dream of going to the new world. He (*and the Spanish colonists and conquistodors who followed him) also killed 30,000 native Americans. People feel we shouldn't celebrate Columbus Day because he did not find the New World, he found the Bahamas. And John Cabot was sailing at the exact same time. I think it is important to celebrate Columbus day because he made the dream of coming to the new world.
