October 13, 2010 Day Twenty-Seven

Sophie woke up early this morning for Wednesday skate at Bowdoin College with the Skating Club of Brunswick. She skated and practiced for over two hours. I also want to take the time here to mention that on Saturday morning Sophie skates for almost four hours and spends part of that time as a Junior Coach teaching beginner skaters. After skating Sophie spends time with her Emma and Coach Linda and sometimes her best friend Sadie and they have breakfast together before school. This morning I had some bank business to take care of so Jean brought Sophie home and I assigned her work via text message from the bank.

Sophie spent some time silent reading her John Cabot novel and then completed her first Vocabulary Review. She did very well, missing only a few of the words and definitions. I am very proud of her—it was a tough one! I have included it here—try it! The answers have all come from Sophie's 5 x 5s.

Then we went to the farm to retrieve Lily and do some chores. I did the stalls, planted some raspberries and blackberries, and started preparing to build the cold frame gardens later this week. Sophie and Lily built elaborate fairy houses in the sand while we worked the farm. It was a beautiful and warm fall day and all enjoyed. Sophie spent last night at the farm where she will work on her Portrait assignment and learn how to use a sewing machine to make her Halloween costume.

We also had a long talk about homeschool and her schedule for the next couple of months. We decided to work hard but for not as many hours each school-day until the play and her testing is done, which is in time for our holiday break. Our new plan is to have the play ready to perform at the end of the second week of November or beginning of the third. She will have filmed her final presentation for her Age of Discovery Scrapbook by that time as well. We are still planning to visit Plymouth Plantation next month as the beginning of our next unit: Colonial America.

Sophie and I agreed that in order for her to stay rested, happy, and ready to test and perform we need to "let up" somewhere. But we are also in agreement that if we limit the actual school-time for the next six weeks then during that limited time Sophie has to work extra hard. Sophie pointed out that if she were still attending public school, she'd be having almost seven hours of school-time but she wouldn't be working as hard or learning as much as the two-and-a-half to three hours of homeschool time! We also talked and agreed to make some changes regarding Lily during school-time. The Wii will no longer be used downstairs by Lily when Sophie is working on school. In the past week Lily has shown more interest and longevity to work on her own "school" and we will work on keeping that balance. But my "go to" of sitting Lily in front of the Wii is too much of a distraction for Sophie during school. I agreed to make the change and she agreed that if that change were made, she'd have to work more on her own with my guidance but also sharing my full attention with her sister.

Learning lessons.
