Activities @ Farm School

Art: Sophie designed and made (with manual labor help from Mom & Gamma, who supplied all the materials, including the feathers from Buddy the Turkey) a beautiful and unique Native American necklace inspired by the bead pattern she chose from her Web Quest on Day Eighteen. The intention of the necklace was both to make something thematic and beautiful and to understand the significance of beadwork to Native Americans but also to use the finished product as part of one of the costumes for Sophie's play.

Movie: Pocahontas (Disney version, 1995). While working on the necklace we watched Pocahontas. We discussed that although the cartoon version was very much a fairy-tale telling of the Jamestown settlement and John Smith/Pocahontas love affair, it was still a good, accessible representation of the initial meeting of Native Americans and Europeans. We took every opportunity to point out parts of the movie that demonstrated what Sophie's learned about Native Americans and sailors and the first Europeans. We had a laugh because one of the activities we did today was make hardtack, a cracker/biscuit, flavorless flour/baking powder/salt/water concoction that sailors ate aboard ship and it was referenced in the movie more than once.

Cooking/Chore/Craft: Today we let Lily have the cooking portion of this activity and she and Gamma made hardtack for us to try. Sophie and Gamma prepared the "Wampum" beads by dyeing dioteli pasta colors that represent the mussel shells used by the Native Americans to make wampum. Later this weekend Sophie will write, design, and make her own Wampum belt to be used as a prop in her play.
