Chemistry Chapter Report for Amazing Kitchen Chemistry Projects You Can Build Yourself
by Cynthia Light Brown
Chapter Name:
- List any glossary words and definitions.
Pure Substance: a substance where all of the molecules are the same, such as pure gold or a quartz crystal.
Properties: unique characteristics of a substance
Neurotoxic: poisonous to nerves or nerve tissues, like the brain
- List 5 facts/details you learned from the chapter.
1. A chocolate bar has 57 different compounds in it.
2. Milk is not a pure substance.
3. Without mixtures we wouldn't have ice cream, pizza, stars, or even LIFE!
4. There is a Chemistry story where Baba Yaga the witch captures a little girl and has to use chemistry to get each poppy seed out of each grain of dirt.
5. Mom and me are going to do the Leaves and dirt chemistry project.
- Summarize the chapter in at least 5 sentences.
This chapter tells how important mixtures are in both chemistry and real life. It tells how mixtures are in food and teaches you about how to tell a pure substance from a non pure subject. It leads up to the chemistry project of Leaves and dirt, which I will do with mom tomorrow.
- What did you learn?
I learned about the mixtures and how to tell a pure substance from a non pure substance and how to tell how many molecules are in the pure substance.
- Summarize the lab or project for chapter and make any notes for preparation and list the materials needed.
Dry leaves or sawdust
Dirt
Two deep bowls
Water
Two plates
We are going to do the Leaves and Dirt trick, there is no summarization of what's going to happen, I will tell you what happened after we did though J
Chemistry Lab Report for Amazing Kitchen Chemistry
Date:
Chapter Name: Mixing up with Mixtures
Lab or Project Name: leaves and Dirt trick
Materials Needed:
Dirt
Dry leaves
Two deep bowls
Water
Two plates
Preparation Notes for Lab:
I read the story of Baba Yaga that told what was going to happen
Step or Stage 1: What did you do? What do you notice?
I gathered the leaves and dirt from the woods, and put them in to one bowl.
Step or Stage 2: What did you do? What do you notice?
I mashed up the leaves in the cup in to small pieces, I mixed the leaves and dirt together
Step or Stage 3: What did you do? What do you notice?
I put half of the mixture in another bowl.
Step or Stage 4: What did you do? What do you notice?
We tried to separate the leaves from the dirt but it didn't really work.
So then we poured water in to the bowl we didn't separate and ALL the leaves we mashed up came floating to the top of the water and all the dirt stayed perfectly at the bottom
Step or Stage 5: What did you do? What do you notice?
I learned the process of making a mixture and separating a mixture which is important to chemistry because the density and thickness and buoyancy of the two different parts of the mixture are so different that they separate by particles, figuring this out would be chemistry
"Liberty Kids" PBS series summary: This is now one of my new favorite shows! Liberty kids is a show about three kids living in the time of the Revolution. James Hiller, Sarah Phillips, and Anre LeFranje, are those three kids. Sarah Phillips reminds me of Ruth from last unit, she writes back to her mother every day (her mother is back in England.) Sarah starts out as being a complete royal subject, but on the way, starts to question it. James is a real patriot who is an apprentice to Benjamin Franklin. Ben has taught James to be a journalist and he is now one to the Pennsylvania Gazette. James, Sarah and Anre venture through the Revolution becoming best friends, meeting important people, and making history. I wonder what will happen next on LIBERTY KIDS!
