Sophie and the Beanstalk (and the piece of toast)

Sophie Calderwood, who is 54 inches tall and 14 inches wide, went to the market to sell a cow. One merchant in the market place offered to buy Sophie’s cow for three magical beans. Sophie was so excited about the magic beans that she sold the cow to the merchant and went home to show her mother. Her mother was very upset with her and she threw the beans out the window into the garden.
The next day Sophie woke up to find a giant magic beanstalk outside her window, and of course she wanted to climb it. When she got up into the magical kingdom I, the giant, caught her. I implied that I eat three fried kids on my toast for breakfast every day. But of course Sophie knew that since she was 54 inches tall and 14 inches wide that she would fit perfectly on a 54: 54 piece of toast. So she said, “I wonder if I could fit on a piece of toast as big as that. I said “I think you may.” So I who am 640 inches tall which is about 54 ft. (an average adults height times 10) got the 54: 54 piece of toast.
Sophie knew that an average piece of toast in her world was 5: 5 so everything was approximately 10 times larger in the giant’s world. So she laid on the piece of toast and said “You know what we do in my world, we crack eggs on our toast before we fry them, and you should give it a try.” So of course I did. I went all the way to the refrigerator to get an egg and Sophie showed me how to crack it correctly on one of the three kids lying down. Then I went back into the kitchen to grab another egg and again Sophie showed me how to crack it just right. And then while Sophie was lying back down on the toast I was too anxious and tired to go back into the kitchen so I cracked the nearest egg to me before I realized it was my special golden goose egg, Sophie had planned it all along and she took off with the golden goose that came out of the egg and ran down the beanstalk.
I wanted my golden goose back however, I was too tired to run after her and so I never bothered her again and she never bothered me. But I had heard a story that when she got home that night she was very interested in proportions and so she was doing her homework and accidently drank a magic potion to make her smaller, she was about the size of a mouse and she wondered if she could fit on a regular piece of toast now since she was 10 times smaller than her normal height. She was right she laid on a normal 5: 5 piece of toast and fit perfectly since her height was 5.4 inches : 1.4 inches.

a. Daily spark Critical thinking: 3 sisters went out to dinner and had a bill of $30, and each of them paid $10. When the waiter came to collect the money, he realized that the bill was $25 instead of 30. Instead of giving the sisters back all of their change, the waiter took $2.00 for himself and gave the sisters back the other $3, one dollar each. At the end of the night, each sister paid $9. 9 x 3 + 27, + the $2 that the waiter took = $29. But what happened to the extra dollar? Try to figure it out!

b. In Shakespeare Daily Spark I studied some of his soliloquies. My assignment was to try and think of some ways that modern movies and plays use the same idea as soliloquies.

c. A Soliloquy is when an actor on stage is alone and telling the audience the characters thoughts. Soliloquies are not consistently used in modern entertainment but I came up with a few similar devices used in modern movies and plays that carry the same idea as Soliloquies. Some of those devices include songs, like “The Wizard and I” from “Wicked” Speeches, like in “A Chorus Line” Voice over’s and letter writing like in “The Princess Diaries”

Final Project: "Can you Find...Industrial Revolution"

Follow this link:  to Google Drive Presentation Slide Show

Here's the project in text with images Sophie created:

Can you find? This book teaches you all about the Industrial Revolution! On each page read the story and then find the objects you learn about in the fun puzzle of pictures. For those of you wondering, the Industrial Revolution is a time period in the world were many inventions and factories were built all at once. This is how we got many modern inventions today like the telephone, the car, and schools!

Can you find...Transportation
Have you ever ridden in a car? Have you ever been on a plane? How about a Train? All of these things were made during the Industrial Revolution. Transportation was a big invention of this time. People who had to ride in carriages pulled by horses didn’t have to any more. You could now get your mail much faster, because you could put it on a train or boat. Steamboats carried people across the ocean much faster than sailing ships. But they looked much different back then, then they do now. Overtime the inventions evolved to become safer and easier to use but we owe all of our modern transportation to the Industrial Revolution.

Can you find...Communication
Have you got a telephone at your house? Have you ever sent an email? Communication was a very big invention made during the Industrial Revolution. It started with Samuel Morse and the invention of the telegraph. The telegraph was a way to send emails using dots and dashes, a series of long and short beats for every number. This brought Alexander Graham Bell to make a better version of this and when he was working on it, he apparently spilled something on his clothes and called for his assistant in the other room through the machine and he could hear him! Did you know that there are telegraph wires under the ocean that lets America send a telegraph to Europe?

Can you find...Health & Education
Have you ever gone to the doctor? I bet you go to school? Believe it or not these are the result of new Idea and improvements made during the Industrial Revolution too! The Industrial Revolution is funny because one invention triggers another and then that one triggers another. So when Doctor Edward Jenner decided to invent the Smallpox vaccination (which is a shot that prevents you from getting sick) that triggered another Doctor to find cures for other viruses. The establishment of one room school houses were put together during this era too. In 1852 a law was passed that said all children between the ages of 8 and 14 had to attend the public school. If it wasn’t for this law and later laws you might not be able to go to school!

Can you find...Human Rights
Have you ever worked? Back when the cotton mills were running you would probably have to. Child labor in textile mills was really important to factory owners because they would do a lot of work and get paid very little money. But child labor laws are why you do not work today. The workers in the mill were mostly young women. This was a big change because women could now leave the farm and live in the city and they had money to spend on clothes and food. This helped create the middle class.  Young women would shared a room with almost 5 other woman and they would have to sleep in a tiny little bed together every night. A newsletter article was created where women wrote articles. This was the first time this could happen, it started by women speaking up for themselves and it started the suffrage movement which was when all of the women stood up and wanted to be treated equal by being allowed to vote. Unions and protection of workers rights were created during the Industrial revolution in order to convince factory owners to give them better pay, shorter hours and safe work place.
