Like every new schoolyear, we're still working out our new schedule, goals, and daily schoolwork.
Here's a summary of Sophie typical schoolweek:
Monday-- 7 x7 assigned, due Tuesday.
8:45-9:45 look over all assigned work--Sophie chooses 1 or 2 lessons to complete before we leave for skating.
The workbooks, activities, and other materials needed to complete the 7 x 7 are laid out.
Skating 9:45-12:30 (travel time included) She reads in the car on the way to the rink.
12:30-1:00 lunch
1:00-2:45 more schoolwork. Her goal is to complete at least 3 sections of the 7 x 7 by the end of the day.
3:15 home with Lily--Sophie uses the last bit of schooltime to read or listen to her audiobook.
Tuesday--finish 7 x 7
8:45-9:45 this can be a good time for me to "lecture" or work with Sophie on making sure she's understanding all her subjects and lessons and to see if she has any questions. This morning she did a chapter in her Latin workbook and read aloud in Latin. Then she completed her Language part of her 7 x 7 and then did one page in her Writing workbook.
9:45-12:30 travel & skating--read another chapter in her Teddy Roosevelt bio.
12:30-1:45 read aloud from Roll of Thunder while we ate lunch together. She finished her Writing and Reading parts of 7 x 7.
2:00 Voice lesson at Midcoast School of Music
3:00 Finished 7 x 7 DUE
Wednesday --no skating day! 7 x 7 assigned with new workbook pages, books, and materials
She works all day with some breaks.
She also watched Gypsy today with Bette Midler!
By the end of the day she completed 4 of the 7 parts of her 7 x 7.
Thursday--skating in afternoon, so a chance to get a lot of work done
Worked through most of the morning, then had a nice break to dance and listen to music and get outside. She will finish her second 7 x 7 by the time she leaves for skating @ 2:45.
3:00 Finished 7 x 7 DUE
Friday--7 x 7 assigned--due Monday morning.
8:45-9:45 Goal is to finish at least 2 of the subjects before she leaves for skating.
9:45-12:30 skating--reading in the car on the way there and back--doing workbook work doesn't work as well bc handwriting is pretty messy in the car.
12:30-1:30 lunch & read aloud Roll of Thunder
1:30-2:00 Math lesson from Math & Literature book using Roll of Thunder
2:00-3:15 continue to work on 7 x 7--whatever doesn't get finished by the end of "school" on Friday, she has for "homework" bc it's DUE on Monday morning.
*Next week Sophie will start & Finish her first History project for the unit, which is a Can You Find? book about the Industrial Revolution~
We will also complete our first Science Lab working with the microscope!
For readers of the blog, keep in mind that we're not posting all the work that Sophie completes each week. The 7 x 7 works as a summary of her work and what she's learning by working in the workbooks, reading and listening to her novels, the long talks and discussions we have, and also working with the Daily Spark activities.

in Bangor Maine! He falls in love with a girl named Julie Jordan and she
somehow she loves him too. They get married but Billy isn’t so much of a good husband.
Julie tells him that she is going to have a baby and he is so happy. He sings a
soliloquy about his baby and realizes throughout the song that he needs money
to give the child all that it needs.
In Act two he realizes
that the only way to get money is to become a criminal which is the total
opposite of what he needs to do, the man that they were trying to rob had a gun
and he shot Billy in the stomach and he ended up dying, Julie was absolutely heartbroken.
Now her baby had to grow up living
without a father and Julie will miss the only man she ever loved so much. She
never even got to tell Billy how much she loved him. Now Billy has an angel
take him to the sky where he meets the Star keeper who says that Billy can go
back to Earth for one visit, and that his fifteen year old daughter is having
trouble with growing up. Louise, Billy’s daughter, always gets teased by the
other kids about her father and she is really sad. Her graduation is coming up

Sophie's Blog: My Summer
My summer
My summer, my summer was exciting this year, my summer was
beaches and camps and of course skating. This summer I was determined to see if
I could make new friends which happened, and to see if I could give back the
friendship I had with old friends from years ago, which happened. I feel like I
have grown up this summer quite a bit, well I am twelve years old!
My favorite part of summer was all the camps that I did
probably. I went to many camps and each of them were truly wonderful and I
loved everything about the three camps I was at. At Bowdoin college summer day
camp I went for two weeks of athletic fun. I learned how to play basketball,
newcome and all sorts of SUPER fun activities and sports and games that I now
love doing. I also went to skating camp like every year but this time with new
people I went with Charlotte, Leah, Shania, and Makayla. We all had a great
time and completed all of our skating goals. Two weeks ago I went to a theater
camp in Portland that was phenomenal it was a lot like the theater project
except they sang and danced as well as acting. It was an amazing experience and
I definitely want to do more shows there throughout the school year and summer.
Unlike last summer we took a lot of time to go to many
beaches throughout Maine, We went to beaches such as Reid State park, Popham
beach, Winslow Park and they were all a lot of fun. I went to a whole bunch of
MSMT shows I went to nine in total! My favorite was probably 42nd street
or a chorus line. It made me really miss the theater though. However next year
they will be doing three shows with children parts in them I would really love
to be baby June or baby Louise in Gypsy or maybe even Cosette in Les Miserables.
This school year I will really be looking forward to watching all of these
shows and learning parts for the auditions.
Last Friday was my birthday
and today my first day of school, summer went by fast. 7th grade, I
cannot believe it has been seven years since the first day, which Lily is
experiencing right now, of school. I remember every detail, I was wearing a
magenta short sleeve top and a pink floral skirt, I was starting first grade. Seven
years since that.
This year I am excited for learning about old England and
old whales and especially excited to be going there in a little over a month. What
an experience it will be, my first time out of the country and all the way
around the world to London and Whales. It will be amazing to go to the 2,000
year old castles right across the street from my cousin’s house! It will be so
much fun!
Sep. 4, 2012 Day 1 Seventh Grade
Seventh Grade! Middle school! Junior High! Twelve!
Sophie decided to homeschool for seventh grade. The decision was not hers alone but I began the process by asking Sophie what she wanted for her seventh grade year. Her resounding answer to my question to homeschool another year was "Yes!"
Our "plan" for our future homeschooling has always been not to but rather approach each new year as it came with consideration and thoughtfulness. Besides, Sophie has a lot of important skating, theater, and traveling goals and adventures to look forward to this year and truthfully, "school" gets in her way.
Sophie is a mature, hard-working, earnest, independent, considerate, and excited learner--the best student any teacher could desire! This year I've upped the anty for her and my expectations and her goals are significantly increased.
I've planned this 175 school-days year as a three-and-a-half unit year (Sept--June). We will build on the 5 x 5 and 6 x 6 model and will post blogs accordingly.
As I explained to Sophie this morning, one of the things that makes 7th grade different in most public school models is that student start switching classes and can have many different teachers throughout the day depending on the subject and not just one or two teachers in the same class with the same kids. Now, we can't mimic that format at home--there's only one of me and one of her--but we can adapt to a 7-subject learning model.
The Seven Subjects for Seventh Grade are (not in any particular order of schedule or importance):
1. Math
2. Science
3. History/ current events / geography
4. Language: Latin / Spanish
5. Writing/ Grammar
6. Reading / Literature
7. Music / Theater / Art
Sophie will complete three 7 x7s each week. A 7 x7 will be "due" each Tuesday, Thursday, and Monday morning. A typical week:
Monday--start 7 x 7 Seven Subjects with Seven "Things I learned."
1. Math
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.
f.
g.
2. Science
a-g
etc.
The first 7 x 7 of the week is due by the end of the day Tuesday. The second 7 x 7 is due by the end of day Thursday. The third is due NO LATER than Monday morning. This plan should give her some "homework" opportunities.
Her goal and my expectation is that each of the "seven things I learned" for each of the seven subjects will be thoughtful, smart, interesting, critical, and impressive. The 7 x 7 format continues to be an opportunity to organize her own learning while having the chance to teach our blog readers too!
*One of the seven things for each subject should include an image or hyperlink to video, website, or reference.*
Sept--Nov. 20, 2012 Unit One * I will expand my thoughts and plans in a future post*
1. Math--Danica McKellar and Kahn Academy
2. Science--Cells--using workbook and microscope
3. History--post Civil War America to 1910, then British history in preparation for Sophie's trip to England and Wales in late-October.

4.Language--Latin, Minimus Secondus
5. Writing / Grammar--workbook and Daily Spark

6. Reading/ Literature--Harry Potter, workbook, Daily Spark
7. Music/ Theater/ Art--Voice lessons TBD, Theater--Musicals history and catalog, and Art--styles, history, artists
EACH subject will include one major project for each unit. Sophie will therefore complete and present 7 Subject-based projects at the end of each unit.
Sophie will work hard again this year and will conclude her seventh grade term with an impressive catalog of learning and experiences.
Part of her homeschooling will also include skating 3-4 times a week during the schoolday for a couple of hours with her coach as she prepares for Regionals on October 20th. Skating fulfills not only her passion but also her physical activity part of her education.
Sophie will also have the opportunity to travel to England and Wales for a couple of weeks at the end of October with her grandmother to visit her aunt and uncle and triplet cousins! What an exciting year!
